England call up Willett

THE Rotherham golfer Daniel Willett, the new English Amateur champion, has been selected for the Walker Cup team.

The phone call was made to a delighted Willett yesterday and now he can mark down September 8 and 9 in his increasingly busy diary and a date with the USA in the Great Britiain and Ireland team for the top amateur team tournament at Royal County Down.

Willett, 19, forced the selectors' hand with his victory in the English Amateur Championship at the weekend which followed up his magnificent 10 stroke victory in the South of England Amateur Championship.

The Rotherham Golf Club plus five handicapper, also Yorkshire Amateur Champion, said: "I gave myself as good a chance as anyone of getting into the Walker Cup side and I was confident I would be selected."
