SHEFFIELD Renewables is urging city residents to support its plans to install turbines on the River Don to generate electricity.

The social enterprise company is taking part in a national X Factor-style competition for funding and needs people to give their support.

If enough people sign up and vote for Sheffield Renewables, they will win £100,000 towards the scheme at Jordan Dam.

The scheme would generate enough to power 80 typical family homes.

Director Mark Wells said: “We would encourage everyone to vote for Sheffield by registering support and voting for us. It is a free and easy way for people to get involved, helping to develop local renewable energy schemes.

“The project is driven by the enthusiasm and time contributed by our volunteers.”

n Voting is open until December 3. Log on to to vote.
