End of Sheffield's Tent City- '˜the hard work starts now'

31-year-old Anthony Cunningham, who grew up in Park Hill, originally set up the camp to make it easier for rough sleepers to find the services who could help them to find housing.

In a live broadcast on Facebook last night, Mr Cunningham said: “Tent City has done its job. It provided basic shelter and then the professionals stepped in - pressing the buttons that needed to be pressed.

"It’s done now and we won’t need to have people within tents in Sheffield because there’s so many places that people are being offered. They just need to work with the services and work with myself as well to get on with it.”

Mr Cunningham claimed around 20 people were rehoused as a result of his efforts across the month- which were helped by donations of food and clothes from Sheffield’s generous residents.

He added this morning that ‘the hard work starts now’, and that the public should tell any rough sleepers remaining on the city’s streets to seek help at Howden House - a council-run ‘First Point’ service helping people find housing.

He ended today's broadcast by saying: “It’s as simple as that- not one person needs to be sleeping rough on these streets now.”

The next challenge Mr Cunningham has set for himself is to climb Mount Snowdon in Wales to raise money for his charitable group, L.I.F.E A New Beginning.
