The empty space

The following poem was written by my friend, now in her 90s, who, as a child lived in Rustlings Road.

She no longer lives in Sheffield, and was most upset to hear of the tree felling.

The poem was inspired by a childhood memory, and I found it in a book of her own work written some years ago.

The Empty Space, by Elizabeth Dunstan

I looked from my window

At men brawny and bold

One carried a saw

For what? I hadn’t been told

Destruction commenced

The saw played its part

Hacking its way right through my heart

Now, gone is the tree, a giver of pleasure

A beautiful thing, it’s memory I’ll treasure.
