Emergency services rescue cat caught inside car engine on Sheffield estate

The animal is believe to have climbed inside the engine from underneath the vehicle, possibly because it was a warm place, and is understood to have been discovered when the engine was switched on.

The owner called emergency services, and a fire crew from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched to deal with the problem. The animal welfare charity, the RSPCA, was also called to the scene to help the animal.

The stricken creature had got caught in the fan belt and was unable to get out.

A single fire engine from Elm Lane Fire Station was sent to the incident, which happened on Deerlands Mount, near Halifax Road, in Parson Cross.

Firefighters jacked the car up to access the underside of the engine and locate the cat. They then used cutting equipment to cut the fan belt and free the cat.

Firefighters said the cat appeared to be all right, and ran after it was released, but it was then taken away by the RSPCA official to check on its health after the incident.

The incident happened at around 10pm on Saturday night.

It is not the first cat to be rescued by South Yorkshire fire fighters this summer.

In June, firefighters freed an animal trapped between two fences next near an industrial estate, which was thought to have been thrown out of a vehicle in Askern, Doncaster, a short time after rescuing another from a flat fire.
