Emergency services battle to clear M1 crash wreckage near Chesterfield

Two lorries which were involved in a collision on the M1 motorway near Chesterfield caused big delays for motorists as emergency services battled to clear the wreckage.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway between junctions 30 and 29 at about 2.10am, today, Saturday, May 23.

A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said: “The two lorries were well alight on the M1 and firefighters used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.”

The area was made safe by about 4.40am but the incident created big delays along the motorway.

Both southbound and northbound carriageways had to be closed initially however the northbound carriageway was reopened about 6.50am.

But the southbound carriageway remained closed throughout Saturday, according to the emergency services.

A diversion was put in place for affected motorists and the scale of the collision was captured in this dramatic picture taken by a Derbyshire Times reader.
