Emergency service hit

ELDERLY and vulnerable people in Sheffield were disconnected from an emergency telephone helpline after computers crashed.

The Citywide Alarms service was suspended for an hour and 20 minutes on Monday evening.

Paul Green, Sheffield Council’s director of information services, said: “As a result of an unexpected hardware failure which impacted on the council’s telephony systems, phones were unavailable for a period on Monday.

“Sheffield Council and Capita employees worked quickly to resolve the issue, including relocating a number of staff to an area of the city which was unaffected by the failure, and we are able to confirm that there have been no reported incidents as a result of this short downtime.”
