Tragedy as man falls to death from roof of Doncaster’s Frenchgate shopping centre

A man has fallen to his death from the roof of Doncaster’s Frenchgate shopping centre.

The tragedy happened today, Tuesday, October 22, on the same day a person died on the line near to the city’s railway station in a separate incident.

Emergency services raced to the station on Trafford Way at lunchtime after reports of a man falling from the rooftop car park of the Frenchgate towards railway lines below.

Earlier, British Transport Police confirmed that a person had died on tracks near to Doncaster railway station.

It has now been established that the two incidents are separate and are not connected.

We have asked both British Transport Police and South Yorkshire Police for further details of both of the incidents.

Issuing a statement regarding the first death, a spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Doncaster at around 9am today (22 October) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the death.”

A spokesperson for rail operator LNER said: “It is with great sadness that we report that a person has passed away on the rail in the Doncaster area.

“LNER work closely with the Samaritans and The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). If you or someone who is close to you has been affected by this incident, or any other, there is always someone to talk to.

A spokesperson for Northern said: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident at Doncaster some lines are blocked.

“Train services running through this station will be delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.”

Then, police, fire crews and ambulances were all called to the railway station shortly after noon following reports of a man’s body being found at the side of the Frenchgate centre car park, which overlooks the East Coast Main Line.
