By 6.45 am, blue and white police tape was stretched across the road, from the metal fencing on the Sheffield University tram stop, which is located between the two carriageways, and the central reservation.

Police have already been offered closed circuit television showing the area.

Specialist police investigation workers arrived at the scene shortly before 7am, with officers raising the police tape to allow them through.

Small yellow, pyramid shaped evidence markers could be seen on road where they worked. Each of them was marked with a number.

A dark coloured car could be seen on the road inside the cordon, with markers close to it.

South Yorkshire Police said in a statement after the incident morning: “Please be aware that a road closure is in place on Upper Hanover Street in Sheffield due to a road traffic collision.

“The road is closed at the crossroads with Glossop Road heading in the direction of St Mary's Gate.

“We are advising people to avoid the area and plan an alternative route if possible.”

The police cordon has now been lifted.
