Gridlock after serious incident closes part of ring road

A major Sheffield route is closed today, after a serious police incident early this morning.

South Yorkshire Police has warned motorists to avoid the area after a road traffic collision, which has closed a section of Upper Hanover Street, part of the inner ring road, at its junction with Glossop Road.

The closure is on the carriageway nearest to the city centre heading towards St Mary’s Gate.

The carriageway heading towards Brook Hill roundabout is not closed.

Eyewitnesses have described gridlock near the University’s Diamond building.

South Yorkshire Police issued a warning to the public to avoid the area in the early hours of this morning, publishing a message online at 3.42am.

By 6.45 am, blue and white police tape was stretched across the road, from the metal fencing on the Sheffield University tram stop, which is located between the two carriageways, and the central reservation.

The trams are affected by the incident, and police cars are parked on the tramlines at the university stop.

There is also a short stretch at the end of Glossop Road taped off.

Police have been offered closed circuit television showing the area.

Affected tram passengers are able to use their tickets on First Bus services, however Travel South Yorkshire have issued an update warning that a number of routes are expected to be disrupted.

“Services 6, 30, 51, 52, 52a, 120 and 120K to divert via Rockingham Street, Broad Lane and Brookhill roundabout in both directions,” the local public transport service said in a statement.

Specialist police investigation workers arrived at the scene shortly before 7am, with officers raising the police tape to allow them through.

Investigators have been surveying the area with specialist equipment, mounted on a tripod.

Small yellow, pyramid shaped evidence markers can be seen on road where they are working. Each of them is marked with a number.

A dark coloured car is on the road inside the cordon, with markers close to it.

The road closure is expected to cause traffic chaos during rush hour this morning.

Trams are also affected.

As of 7.15am the Yellow route was suspended between Cathedral and Middlewood.

Services are continuing to operate between Cathedral and Meadowhall Interchange.

South Yorkshire Police said in a statement this morning: “Please be aware that a road closure is in place on Upper Hanover Street in Sheffield due to a road traffic collision.

“The road is closed at the crossroads with Glossop Road heading in the direction of St Mary's Gate.

“We are advising people to avoid the area and plan an alternative route if possible.”
