Lee Pitcher MP, for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, said: “I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic incident that has taken place at Yorkshire Wildlife Park today.

“I understand that support is being made available for those who need it.

“As ever, I offer my heartfelt thanks to the emergency services for their speed and professionalism and I know I speak for everyone in Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme when I say our thoughts are with all of those affected by today's events.”

Police scrambled to the Branton zoo at 1.35pm yesterday (Saturday) after reports of a man entering the tiger enclosure.

Footage circulating online showed a man sat on the grass with what is understood to be a Siberian tiger named Altai, who arrived from Norway last year.

As the huge animal pawed and bit at him, the young-looking male who is yet to be identified, screamed “no, no”, while pointing at the male big cat.

Shots were fired to stop the mauling and a black tarpaulin was placed around the pen while emergency services fought to save the “seriously” injured man’s life and visitors were evacuated.

However police later said “despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene”.

The park remains closed.
