Crumbling chimney lands on neighbouring property causing gas leak on residential street in Rotherham

A crumbling chimney on a residential home led to a gas leak in which people were evacuated in Rotherham.

At 9.47pm on Saturday, February 7, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called to Rawmarsh Hill, near the Parkgate area of Rotherham, after the chimney of a home collapsed.

The fire service has now revealed that when the chimney fell, debris hit a neighbouring property, causing a gas leak.

Firefighters remained at the scene until after 11pm, and a spokesperson told The Star that ‘no injuries have been reported’.

Nearby residents told a reporter that they heard a bang before emergency services arrived.

Police also attended to support firefighters at the scene.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “At 9.55pm on Saturday, February 7, we were called to reports of a concern for safety at an address on Rawmarsh Hill.

“It is reported that there was a gas leak at a property.

“The occupants were evacuated as a safety precaution, and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service attended the scene.”
