Sheffield residents are being reminded that today is the last day they can register to vote for the elections next month.

Last week figures showed that more than 45,000 eligible people had not yet registered for the local and general polling days on May 7 - although thousands more have now done so.

The deadline to register is at midnight tonight.

John Mothersole, returning Officer for the elections in Sheffield, said: “If you are not on the register, you will not be able to vote.

It’s important for everyone to be registered to vote in the general and local elections.

“The Government has introduced a new system that places responsibility on individuals to ensure they are registered. It’s a very simple process and will only take a few minutes if your details have not been automatically transferred already.

“I would encourage everyone to check to see if you need to register and ensure your name is listed so you don’t lose your right to vote.”

Registering online should take less than five minutes.

People will be asked for their date of birth and National Insurance number. These details are checked against Government records to help make sure that registrations are genuine.
