Eighth new primary school open

A new primary school opens in Barnsley on Monday as part of a radical £185 million project to build new schools for 3,600 pupils and staff.

The official opening of Springvale Primary at Sheffield Road in Penistone will see the Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Len Picken and Mayoress Janet Henson joined by a colourful cast of characters including Scooby Doo, Toby Tyke, a Pirate of the Caribbean and Sopwith the Camel.

Springvale will be the eighth of 13 new primary schools to be opened in Barnsley since last summer. All have been built by Carillion.

The council says these state-of-the-art schools will deliver 21st century learning facilities as part of the education authority’s Remaking Learning agenda, which aims to create more modern, accessible schools.

Springvale headteacher Hilary Smith said: “We are really proud of our new school and intend to mark the opening as a day to remember.

“The children are aware that they are a special part of the history of Springvale and they have helped us decide who will attend the party.

“A street dance choreographed by an ex-pupil, Hannah Geal, will be performed by all the pupils including the Foundation Stage Unit.

“Each class has nominated two pupil photographers to document the day and produce digital presentations as a record for future historians of Springvale.”

Coun Linda Burgess, Cabinet spokeswoman for Children’s Services, said: “Young people can now learn in spacious, modern surroundings which provide a more pleasant and stimulating base from which to build their education.”
