Edwards named Rotherham's first sevens coach

Rhys Edwards, who has previously coached the Wales U-18s, Wales Women and young players at the Cardiff Blues academy, will develop a Sevens squad at the Titans as well as improving the skills of the Championship team.

“Rhys’ job is a massive step forward for Rotherham,” said head coach Justin Burnell. “He has a proven record and a great understanding of what’s required as regards basic skills and also what’s needed skills-wise by the top players.

“He will identify and work with talent throughout Yorkshire and in and around the Rotherham area so that we have really good players coming to us.”

Recently, Rotherham have taken part in two sevens’ tournaments, including an event last weekend in Chester where the Titans won one of the competitions.

Developing a strong sevens squad is seen as essential for the long-term future of the Titans who are keen to attract younger supporters and players because they enjoy the shorter form of the game.

But what is also important is that talented Sevens players may also possess the skills needed to play Championship rugby, and Edwards is expected to spot them and then bring them up to the required standard.

Titans are hoping to send teams to take part in future sevens tournaments in Dubai, Singapore and Hong-Kong.
