Work to build a new primary school in Goldthorpe is underway.
Contractor, Robertson Construction, has started to clear land off Doncaster Road ahead of a 48-week construction programme which will see a new school open its doors to its first set of pupils in September 2016.
The 310 capacity school, funded by Barnsley Council, is being built on land previously occupied by 190 terraced houses.
Councillor Roy Miller, a member of Barnsley Council’s cabinet, said: “It’s fantastic that work is now underway on the school.
“It will act as a catalyst for investment in the area and bring a much needed uplift to Goldthorpe.
“The school will also raise the confidence of businesses and housing developers in Goldthorpe and will we hope make a significant contribution to the future economic prosperity of the area – one of Barnsley Council’s key priorities.”
During the building programme Central Street and part of Main Street will have to be temporarily closed to traffic.
A group of 15 students will make regular organised site visits to provide feedback reports for other children.
