Residents are being invited to take a look behind the scenes of the Bernard Road incinerator in Sheffield on Saturday, September 15.

Veolia Environmental Services, operators of the site, will be holding the open day to show how the Energy Recovery Facility works and how it makes energy and heat from the city’s non-recyclable black bin rubbish.

The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and during the day visitors can take a tour, visit the control room, sit in the cab of a bin wagon, and speak to members of the recycling team.

Tours must be booked in advance by calling 0114 2734567, and participants must be over the age of 16.

Residents will also be able to test their waste and recycling knowledge with a site quiz and younger visitors will have the chance to have a go at competitions to win prizes.

Plant manager Antony Smith said: “This is a great opportunity to explore what happens at our site. We hope residents will come to meet us and gain an inside view on how we are working on the behalf of Sheffield Council.”
