Five people in Sheffield are among 100 students to be awarded scholarships to study masters degrees at Sheffield University.
They were selected from more than 300 eligible applicants who applied for the scholarships – the country’s biggest ever offer.
Ali Hayward, aged 50, from Gleadless, has been awarded a scholarship to study creative writing.
She studied English Literature through the university’s lifelong learning department, and is now determined to take her passion for creative writing further.
The 50-year-old said: “I’m not well enough to work and so there would have been no way I could have afforded to do a masters degree.
“I am hoping this will allow me to teach, particularly those who missed out on education like I did.”
