A South Yorkshire college which specialises in providing education to adults of all ages and backgrounds has been rated as outstanding in every category by inspectors.

The Northern College, based at Wentworth Castle at Stainborough near Barnsley, was found to need no significant improvements at all.

Students were found to reach their potential due to excellent support, whatever their situations, such as disability, previous substance abuse or previous poor attainment.

Their achievements and successes were outstanding, with all students performing equally well whatever their starting points.

Many also developed top personal, social and employability skills, while diploma students acquired the academic skills that prepared them well for university.

Tutors were inspirational, providing exceptional support which transformed the lives of students and their families.

Some students live-in on the premises, while the college also specialises in community education.

The college’s leaders and governors also received high praise, along with its links with local authorities, trade unions and other organisations.

Principal Jill Westerman said: “We are thrilled that Ofsted has recognised the excellence of the college.”
