Ahead of the 2015 general election, Sheffield Students’ Union is launching a ‘No Borders’ campaign, to challenge the Government’s immigration policies.

In an e-petition to the Home Office, the union’s international students’ officer, Jose Diaz De Aguilar Puiggari, is lobbying for the removal of international student numbers from net migration figures.

Jose said: “No Borders aims to put an end to immigration policies that are damaging international student recruitment and relations and make the UK a more welcoming place for international students.

“The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development defines temporary migrants as people living up to three years in a specific country. International students fall into this category so they should not be included in these already misleading net migration figures.

“The UK cannot control the immigration of UK/EU visitors, so the only way they could significantly reduce net migration is to limit international student recruitment; international students are just an easy target for this Government.”

“Sheffield Students’ Union is committed to defending the rights of international students. I think the petition is a sensible ask of the Government.
