A primary school could take over the running of a Sheffield nursery.

It is hoped Beck Primary School in Shiregreen will manage the nursery next door when its NHS contract finishes at the end of term.

Sheffield Council officers are working with the Beck Road school and the NHS to try and retain nursery provision at the site. They are also meeting parents to find alternative places for their children.

The council said there were pre-school and nursery places in the area.

Counc Jackie Drayton, council cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “We have always been clear that, because of the cuts to Early Years budget by the government – while doing all we can to protect services to families and children – we could not promise these would be in the same place.

“We will help parents find places for all the children.”
