Sheffield University-based science group ‘Science Brainwaves’ has been presented with a national award, to recognise the outstanding contribution of its volunteers.

The British Science Association has presented the group with the 2012 Sir Walter Bodmer Award as part of national volunteers’ week.

Judges said Science Brainwaves stood out as ‘a particularly excellent example of commitment and dedication of our volunteers’.

The initiative was established in 2009 and aims to create more interest in science through holding public events.

These have included exhibitions Weird Physics, Better Looking, Better Loving – The Science of Beauty, The Botany of Gin and hands-on activities, along with a monthly science pub quiz.
