IT’S not every day you stand in for the leader of the Labour Party!
But former Labour councillor Tony Sockett filled Ed Miliband’s shoes at a Doncaster primary school when the MP was forced to pull out of a schoolchildren’s debate on renewable energy.
Coun Sockett, a former council cabinet member, spent the morning at Bentley New Village Primary School, where he acted as chairman for the pupils’ discussions on the positives and negatives of fitting energy-producing solar panels to the school’s roof.
Even though he was unable to make the event in the end, former Government energy secretary Mr Miliband still sent a message of support to the pupils ahead of their debate.
He said: “Alternative energy sources are an issue I care passionately about. Although it’s a hypothetical scenario, it’s great to know that children in my constituency are being given the chance by their teachers to discuss these issues and their possible benefits.”
