Police and ‘copter thrill pupils

The force helicopter made a special landing at a Doncaster school to give the pupils an insight into the work of South Yorkshire Police.

Children from Saltersgate Junior School, Scawsby, were thrilled when SY99 dropped in as part of a day organised by Edlington Safer Neighbourhood Team for Year 3 pupils who are currently working on a project about the emergency services.

SNT officers attended to explain the different roles, responsibilities and departments within the police, and as well as the helicopter, police dogs and handlers also put on a display and the public order van with an officer in full riot gear turned up.

The children were able to look around the riot van and the helicopter, with officers explaining their roles and answering pupils’ questions.

Sgt Richard Vernon said: “This was an excellent opportunity for us to interact with the children and explain the police role as part of the emergency services. I hope the day provided a valuable input for their term project.”
