AUTHORITIES at Sheffield Hallam University are calling for a meeting tonight featuring a controversial Muslim preacher to be cancelled.
Assim Al Hakeem has been invited by the university’s Islamic Society to speak on the position of women in Islam at the university’s Adsetts building on Arundel Gate.
But students are planning to picket the event, saying Al Hakeem is a virulent opponent of homosexuality who supports the stoning of gay people and favours the subjugation of women in marriage.
A planned lecture by the preacher at the University of Hertfordshire last week was cancelled after his invitation to the campus was revoked.
But a Hallam University spokesman said they had no power to step in and stop the Pearls of Islam event.
“We have strongly advised the Islamic society to cancel this lecture – but as it has been organised through the student union we can only advise on the matter,” he said.
“We have told the society it should not go ahead because the correct procedures were not followed for its booking and subsequent promotion. We are continuing to make our position clear.”
Members of Hallam’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender committee have also raised concerns. A protest is being planned tonight by Hallam and Sheffield university students as well members of the gay community.
