Rotherham sixth formers joined a Cambridge University celebration of a scheme which is helping bright young people compete for the best college places.

The town led by Thomas Rotherham College was one of the first areas to join the HE+ project, linking up with Homerton College.

The party marked a major milestone, with 5,000 schools and colleges now part of the programme.

Its goal is to encourage and prepare academically-able students to compete for places at top universities, including Cambridge.

Young people are given extra classes and go on aspiration-raising visits, delivered in partnership with a Cambridge college.

Eleven Maltby Academy students attended a day of masterclasses at Homerton.

Teacher Matt Hallam said that taking part in the project had given his students much greater confidence.
