New friends are climbing high

Youngsters leapt, swung and clambered their way to new friendships at an outreach event to reduce anxiety about stepping up to secondary school.

More than 240 pupils from South Yorkshire primaries faced mental, physical and creative challenges at Hollowford Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Castleton.

The event, staffed by volunteers from The University of Sheffield, was intended to help the youngsters make new friends and grow more confident before starting at Birley Community College in September.

Activities included high ropes, a climbing wall, a blindfold trail, fire lighting and environmental art, while volunteers also fielded questions about student life.
