MORE of Sheffield’s top maths graduates are opting for teaching careers – with numbers up by 10 per cent in 2012.

Applications from graduates with degrees of 2:1 or above are up across the Yorkshire and Humber region, supporting a national trend.

Figures show the proportion of maths graduates entering teacher training with a high quality degree has risen from 51 to 62 per cent over the last year.

Many have been attracted by 150 new teacher training scholarships in maths, worth £20,000 each – with a new batch available from January 21.

Substantial tax-free bursaries are also available for the most able graduates.
