LIBRARIES across Barnsley are the place for youngsters to pick up a book this summer.

Children are being invited to take part in this year’s summer reading challenge, which asks young people to read six different books during the summer holidays.

Young people taking part receive incentives along the way, including collectables, certificates and medals.

This year’s challenge, called Story Lab, will be launched with a free event at Barnsley Central Library, Shambles Street, on Saturday from 10am until 3pm.

Throughout the day visitors will have the opportunity to make a book, meet Astro the magician, and get to know living statue Mr White.

Joanne Northam, children’s engagement librarian at Barnsley Central, said: “We are thrilled to once again be hosting the popular reading challenge event at Barnsley libraries.

“I hope children will use this year’s reading challenge theme as an chance to experiment with books and reading.”
