Lecture by ‘hate’ preacher axed

Have your say

A LECTURE by a controversial Muslim preacher at Sheffield Hallam University was cancelled after pressure from campus authorities.

Assim Al Hakeem had been invited by the university’s Islamic society to speak on the position of women in Islam.

Students planning to picket the event said Al Hakeem was a virulent opponent of homosexuality and favoured the subjugation of women in marriage.

The university said it had no direct powers to stop the Pearls of Islam event as it was organised through the student union.

The event was cancelled by the society hours before Al Hakeem was due to arrive in the city.
