Doncaster primary schools’ delight as results show a rise

DELIGHTED education bosses are celebrating after Doncaster’s primary schools saw their national test results improve.

Officials at Doncaster Council have described the performance of pupils at the borough’s 89 primary and five special schools in key stage two tests as ‘excellent’ after the provisional figures were revealed by the Department for Education.

They believe the figures showed significant progress in both English and maths.

The figures show a six per cent increase in the number of pupils achieving the benchmark level four and above in English and maths combined.

The improvement is the highest across South Yorkshire and is in line with the national average.

The tests were taken by more than 3,000 year six pupils across the borough in May.

In Doncaster 89 per cent of pupils progressed two levels in English, and 86 per cent achieved the same increase in maths. Both figures are higher than the increases recorded in 2011.

The figures are compared to how pupils were performing at the age of six or seven when they were in year two and were tested for their performance at key stage one.

Coun Eric Tatton-Kelly, cabinet member for children, said: “This increase in grades is great news for our primary pupils, their parents and carers, and all those who work so hard at our primary schools to help young people reach their full potential.”

Doncaster’s overall figure for the passes at level four in all subjects, which was 85 per cent, was better than the Yorkshire average of 83.

It was the highest figure in South Yorkshire, ahead of Barnsley, 83, Rotherham, 80 and Sheffield, 80.

But Doncaster’s girls again outperformed the boys, with 89 per cent of girls reaching level four compared with 81 per cent of boys.

This year is an interim year for key stage two tests following recommendations made by a review into testing, assessment and accountability. For writing, there was no externally marked key stage two test so direct comparisons with previous years’ scores are not possible.
