NEWSNIGHT journalist Emily Maitlis is returning to her home city of Sheffield to
collect an honorary degree from Sheffield Hallam University.

The former King Edward VII School pupil was brought up in Sheffield, where her family has lived for 40 years.

She left to study at Queen’s College, Cambridge.

After graduating Emily worked as a radio journalist in Hong Kong, then as a documentary-maker reporting from Cambodia and China, before joining the BBC.

She has presented Newsnight since 2006.

Emily, 42, who now lives in London, said: “It’s an enormous honour to gain recognition for my work as a broadcaster from such a well respected institution.

“What makes it even more special is the fact that it is my home town – my parents are thrilled.”
