Passers-by near one of Sheffield city centre’s tallest buildings will be rubbing their eyes in disbelief at a surreal sight on Sunday – but their eyesight will not be playing tricks.

Darth Vader impersonator Richard Stephens has volunteered to abseil 120ft down Sheffield Hallam University’s Owen Building in aid of the British Red Cross, dressed as the Star Wars film character.

The event will coincide with the city’s Fright Night Halloween party – and other daredevils will also be taking part in fancy dress costumes, including vampires, skeletons, zombies, spiders and even a giant chicken.

Richard said: “I was only too happy to participate in supporting this fantastic worthwhile cause and encourage others to come and get involved.

“Together we can help to raise money for those who need it most.”

Richard will be at the building from 1pm and has offered to pose for photos with Star Wars fans.

n A few places are still left on the abseil. Entry costs £10 and participants are asked to raise at least £100 in sponsorship – visit www.redcross.org.uk/steel
