Sheffield College is set to avoid disruption caused by today’s national strike by lecturers and support workers – as it has already been designated as a staff training and development day.

Students attending daytime courses have been advised to work at home, unless they are taking exams.

Evening classes at Sheffield City College and Hillsborough Barracks are due to go ahead as scheduled, but students are advised to contact their tutor beforehand to confirm.

The learning resource centres at Hillsborough College, Norton College, Peaks College and Sheffield City College will be open as usual for students.

Members of the University and College Union are taking industrial action in conjunction with Unison and Unite in a dispute over pay.

They are protesting against a 1 per cent pay offer which they say will erode salary levels for the fifth year in a row.

Sheffield’s two universities are both set to be affected by the strike, which is the second one-day stoppage this term.
