City academic backs ‘votes at 16’ campaign

Sheffield University academic Dr Craig Berry is backing the campaign to lower the voting age to 16 - arguing it would help counter widespread disaffection among young people.

Dr Berry has gathered evidence from Austria and Norway showing that 16 and 17-year-olds are more likely to vote that older first-time voters.

He calls for a referendum on the issue, in which 16 and 17-year-olds would be entitled to vote.

He said: “Voting should be among the first rights that we bestow upon our young citizens, not the last.”
