Sheffield Hallam University student Chris Redford cleaned up at a national awards ceremony - for his innovative designs for washing machines.

The 22-year-old impressed judges at the Royal Society of Art’s Student Design Awards and won the top prize.

Chris designed a new kind of domestic washing machine that can be repaired by the owner, without the need for a visit by a skilled technician.

He said: “I got the inspiration from thinking about the number of times we dispose of entire products when there might only be a single failed component.”
