SHEFFIELD University academic Matthew Flinders has received a top honour at an annual awards night hosted by the Political Studies Association.

Professor Flinders was named the top political communicator of the year, with judges praising his Radio 4 series In Defence of Politics.

He received his award alongside other winners including Margaret Hodge, Chris Patten, Bill Morris and John Bercow.

The awards ceremony honours the contributions made by politicians, academics, journalists and campaigners to the year’s political activity.

Prof Flinders was praised for his passionate commitment to the public understanding of politics in the wake of the MPs’ expenses scandal, achieved in a clear and accessible way.
