Three Barnsley College trainees scooped three awards at a regional construction competition held in Hull.

Trent Johnson, aged 17, from Darfield, took first place in the bricklaying event on his first appearance at the SkillBuild contest.

Craig Brook, 32, from Gawber, came in second place in painting and decorating, while Ben Bottomley, 34, from Barnsley, won the plastering contest at the first attempt.

Almost 100 construction trainees battled it out in their chosen trade with a variety of skills all being put to the test.

The top 10 competitors from across the 14 heats now go through to the national final at the Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC in November.

SkillBuild has taken place for around 40 years, travelling around the country looking for the best in regional talent.
