Editor's View: Smaller yet still mighty

Every Sheffielder is proud of our steel past - our ingenuity, our inventions and our world class products.

Sadly it isn’t every day that we can celebrate good news for the industry now, but today we can. Congratulations to the team at Forgemasters who once again proved that Sheffield steel is the best in the world.

The investment from over the Atlantic will be welcome news for the many Sheffielders who still rely on the industry.

That is, of course, far fewer than it used to be but steel is not only part of our past, it is very much part of today’s city.

It may not be as visible or employ as many as it once did, and as it clear from the story on Page 2, even the biggest firms face a very real struggle for orders.

There are competitors from all over the world - competing with us using the skills we taught and the materials we designed.

It is hard to imagine what the groundbreaking steelworkers who headed to the Far East to help develop their industries would think today.

But all that aside, today is about good news and I challenge anyone to prove that the wonderful skills available in this city can be beaten anywhere in the world.

Smaller in staff but still mighty and definitely the best.
