The Rawmarsh-based charity that is the High Street Centre now has easier access for elderly and disabled people, to its refurbished ground floor hall and wider premises.

Its welcome and warmth to everyone has been a major factor in the growth of use of the centre, as staff seek to tackle loneliness and social isolation in the area.

Currently more than 50 community groups and up to 1,000 people use the High Street Centre each week, for all kinds of meet-ups and activities.

At its official recent re-opening, John Healey, MP for Wentworth and the Dearne, and representatives of national and regional funding agencies including the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Children In Need, celebrated with local volunteers, community workers and staff.

The latest work to the building was funded by a £50,000 boost from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, which supports the development of such buildings through the Landfill Communities Fund.

It was in 1976 that Rawmarsh Methodist Church was first redeveloped. Between 1998 and 2000, Rawmarsh Methodist Church and community groups fused together as The High Street Centre Charity.

Caroline Langston, High Street Centre Development Manager, said the latest changes will make a significant difference.

She said: “Everyone involved with the High Street Centre is passionate about where they live here in Rawmarsh, and want to do their very best for the community.”

MP Mr Healey described the High Street Centre as dynamic. He added: “The people of Rawmarsh should be proud to have such a thriving project at its heart. I would like to pay tribute to the staff and the volunteers.”
