THE Duke of Devonshire was the VIP guest at the official opening of Staveley Basin.

The £600,000 project to build a new mooring basin and reopen 550 metres of canal is the latest milestone in the restoration of Chesterfield Canal.

Two years of work involved digging out previously disused overgrown waterway to create a 1.5m gallon stop gap which can house up to 20 large boats and 12 smaller craft.

Visitors can access Staveley Basin through an entrance off Eckington Road where a new parking area has been built along with around 500m of towpath and trails suitable for walkers, joggers, horse-riders and wheelchair users.
