A ROW over a debt led to a drunken man attacking a couple during a taxi ride from Sheffield, magistrates heard.

Julian Ord, aged 23, punched his pal, Ross Allfree, in the face as the cab travelled from Sheffield to Chesterfield.

Mr Allfree’s girlfriend, Megan Scott, stood up and told Ord to stop it. Then he punched her in the face too.

Helen Griffiths, prosecuting, said Ord then punched Mr Allfree again.

The taxi stopped near Chesterfield College and Ord tried to drag him out of the vehicle.

Mr Allfree managed to get back into the cab and Ord walked away.

“Miss Scott had a swollen right cheek and a headache. She said it was a totally unprovoked attack on her. Mr Allfree had an egg-sized lump above the eye.

“The defendant said in interview he had hit his friend and his friend’s missus. He said: ‘I know I shouldn’t have, but that’s it’,” added Mrs Griffiths.

Ord, of Harehill Crescent, Wingerworth, admitted assaulting Mr Allfree on February 12.

He denied assaulting Miss Scott but he was convicted following a trial. The foundry worker had previous convictions for violence, disorder and theft.

He was given a 7pm-5am weekend curfew for four months and a one-year probation supervision order and he must pay £50 compensation to each victim, with £425 costs.

“He expresses remorse and understands it was dangerous to behave in such a manner in a moving vehicle,” probation officer Mark Webster told the court.

“He described himself as very drunk at the time.

“There was an argument over Mr Allfree owing him money and he assaulted him.

“With regard to Miss Scott, he maintains this was an accidental assault.”

Mr Webster said Ord was worried about going to prison as he would probably lose his job.

Ord told the court: “If I lose my job I think I will be condemned to the scrapheap.

“I fell into the job and I don’t think there’s anything else out there.”
