Drugs and cash have been seized and arrests have been made in a crackdown on crime in Doncaster.

Dozens of police officers are involved in the operation, which saw five homes on the Balby Bridge estate raided early this morning with five arrests made for alleged drug offences.

South Yorkshire Police said drugs and cash were recovered by officers in Balby and a man was arrested in Cantley after a quantity of Class A and Class B drugs were found.

A man was arrested in Hexthorpe earlier today for failing to attend Glasgow Magistrates' Court for driving offences and officers seized a car for having no insurance.

Immigration checks have also been carried out at a number of homes in Hexthorpe.

Extra officers are patrolling the streets, with bobbies on horseback also involved.

Code-named Operation Duxford, the day of action is aimed at targeting criminal activity and engaging with Doncaster communities.

There have been similar operations across South Yorkshire since the Duxford initiative was launched in September to tackle issues of concern, offer reassurance and improve community trust and confidence in the police through a high visibility presence on the streets.,

Superintendent Colin McFarlane, who is overseeing today’s operation, said: “The main aim for today is to use an increased high visibility police presence to respond and work in partnership with local authorities to robustly address issues of concern reported across Doncaster.

“This aim will be the focus of all activity and work conducted throughout the day and I hope this illustrates to the communities we serve, we have listened to the concerns you have raised and are committed to taking action address these in order to improve community safety and prevent further criminal activity.

“Although this operation is only for one day, I would like to reassure everyone that today’s action is an extension of work and plans that are already and will continue to be put in place, as we work to achieve our number one priority off keeping everyone in Doncaster safe.

“This is the second time the operation has now come to Doncaster and from the action and activity planned, we are hoping to repeat and exceed the successes achieved last time.

Bill Hotchkiss, Doncaster Council’s Head of Community Safety, added “Last time Operation Duxford was in Doncaster, we saw a really positive impact for local people, who saw partner agencies working together to address the problems that really matter to them.

“We are very pleased to be able to continue to work with colleagues from South Yorkshire Police and other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime in Doncaster, and look forward to another successful operation.”
