Drivers face road diversions

MOTORISTS driving into Barnsley are being warned of delays on one of the main roads into the town.

Work will start on Monday on Claycliffe roundabout, the A635 Wilthorpe Road and the A637 Claycliffe Road at Barugh, between Redbrook Road and 100 metres along Claycliffe Road.

Although the work - expected to take two weeks - will be carried out between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm, and again after 6.30pm to avoid peak morning and afternoon periods, the council is asking drivers to be patient.

Because of the complexity of resurfacing the roundabout, and its small size, both the A637 Claycliffe Road and Whaley Road will be closed to traffic at their junctions with Claycliffe roundabout. Each day a diversion route will be in place along the A635 Barugh Green Road to the mini-roundabout at Barugh.

Traffic signal timings at Barugh Green crossroads are being changed and a right-turn filter will be added to help with the increase in traffic.

Access to Claycliffe Road, Whaley Road, and the roads off, will be from the mini-roundabout at Barugh. Coun Roy Miller said: "This scheme is essential maintenance work to one of our main routes into Barnsley.

“It is part of a programme which has seen 4 million spent on A-roads so far.

“We have purposely chosen to do the work during the summer holidays when traffic flows are lightest so traffic delays will be minimized.”
