A MOTORIST has been killed in a crash following a car chase with police in the early hours of this morning.

The 38-year-old man, from Midhopestones near Sheffield, died when the Vauxhall Corsa he was driving hit a tree on Yew Trees Lane, Bolsterstone, near Stocksbridge.

Police were called to reports of a man causing damage to a car on Kenworthy Road, Stocksbridge, at just before 1am this morning, but on their way to the incident officers noticed a white Corsa matching the description provided to them by a member of the public.

The car failed to stop and a short pursuit began before officers lost sight of the vehicle.

Following a search, police found the Corsa, which left the road to the offside on Yew Trees Lane, 50 yards north-east of New Road. The vehicle smashed into a tree and the driver suffered fatal injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, or the driving and whereabouts of the vehicle before the collision, to contact them, as well as anyone who saw the driver’s movements and actions in the hours leading up to the incident.

Call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 52 of August 18.
