Officers from Derbyshire police said they thought their eyes were playing tricks on then when they saw the aftermath of the crash on a motorway camera near junction 30 today.

However, on arrival at the scene, the BMW was indeed found to be underneath the central Armco barrier of the motorway, but with the driver nowhere to be seen.

A police spokesperson said enquiries were ‘ongoing’.

The accident happened near junction 30 of the M1.
