Customers at The Stag Inn in Woodhouse were ushered inside by manager Samantha Oldfield after a 20-strong gang began fighting and causing disorder nearby. The gang had not been drinking in the pub before violence flared.

Said Mrs Oldfield: “All of a sudden, we saw this big gang of lads and lasses heading toward our pub so I told my customers to get inside for their safety.

“There were about 40 people in my beer garden just having a nice time so my main concern was to get them inside.”

The gang forced open the doors of the pub in Market Street, causing damage to locks and bolts and also smashed a window.

She added: “It is the last thing you need on the first day back. It is upsetting after all the hard work that we have put in over the last few weeks that there’s people out there looking to cause problems.”

She said that the pub’s front doors will remain shut while repairs are carried out but that customers will still be able to access the bar through the rear entrance.
