The nephew of a Doncaster woman who sadly passed away this year has praised the actions of her neighbour, who saved her life seven years ago.

Ellen Maidens, 80, who lived alone at Ranyard Road in Balby was found collapsed at her home by Dinah Fagin in November 2009 who acted quickly to get the emergency services to her aid.

She was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where she was treated for hypothermia, dehydration, a large hole at the bottom of her spine which the vascular surgeon said he could fit his fist into. Ellen also had dry gangrene in her right foot which resulted in her losing three toes.

Her nephew David Maidens, of Intake, this week thanked neighbour Dinah for her help in getting his aunt to hospital and prolonging her life for another seven years.

He said: “A doctor on the medical assessment ward where Ellen was being looked after at the time told us that Ellen would not have lived through another six to 12 hours if she hadn’t been found by Dinah so all of her nephews and nieces are grateful to Dinah for helping our Aunt Ellen to live another extended happy seven years of life.”

Since 2014 Ellen was cared for at Brookwood EMI residential care home but was admitted to Doncaster Royal Infirmary in January with pneumonia and vascular dementia where she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
