Doncaster wine bar gets green light for expansion

Proposals to expand a Doncaster wine bar have been approved despite objections from residents.

Otto wine bar in Sprotbrough has been open on Main Street for around two years – and now Doncaster Council’s licensing committee has given the owners, RSM Retail and Bars Ltd, permission to take over the shop next door.

The application was granted despite objections from two local residents.

One of the residents, Graham Cofield, said: “The noise level from Otto has increased significantly this year.

“As they now want to double the size, the noise will increase proportionately.”

However, the bar’s solicitor Jonathan Hyldon said there had been no opposition from any responsible authority, including South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, environmental health and trading standards.

The application was granted subject to conditions.

No children are to enter the premises after 9pm, unless they are attending a private event and with an adult.

The wine bar will be allowed to remain open until 12.30am on Friday and Saturday, and 11.30pm Sunday to Thursday, half an hour later than at present.

The plan was found to meet with licensing objectives, which include making sure children are protected from harm.

However, alcohol will stop being served half an hour before closing – instead, hot drinks will be sold.

There will also be extended hours on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and Sundays before Bank Holidays.

Chair of the committee, Coun Linda Curran, said: “We have sympathy for those who have made representations objecting to the application.

“However, we have not been provided with any evidence from any responsible authority regarding the objectives not being met.”

Mr Cofield was told that he may also ask for a review of the licence if he had any further concerns about the noise.
