An Andy Butler double plus an Andy Williams spot kick saw Rovers come from behind against table topping Wigan, who had David Perkins sent off as part of the penalty decision.

The victory ended Rovers' 16 match winless run in League One and moved them to six points from safety with four games left to play.

"It's been a long, long time until we have had one, regardless of whether we think we should have had one in games," Ferguson said.

"I thought it was thoroughly deserved.

"We were the better team throughout. Generally you can tell how a game is going when the opposition make an early substitution when it's not an injury and change the system.

"We were very unfortunate to be behind. I just said to the players to maintain the performance, don't be worrying about the scoreline too much.

"Obviously the second goal in the game when it is 1-0 is very important and we got it."

He said: "They scored against the run of play and it came from someone we knew would be a threat in Wildschut on the counterattack.

"I couldn't let it affect the players and I couldn't let it affect what I said to them at half time.

"It was a case of don't start running all over the place because they will pick you off. They're a very good team.

"The equaliser got us going and to get another so quickly after was huge.

"We had to deal with them getting a lot more possession, we dropped too deep I felt but Gary used his experience to get the penalty."
